If you drive in Chicago you better have Chicago auto insurance.

If you have ever experienced Chicago during rush hour I am sure that you will agree with me that you need auto insurance. Chicago is a big place and naturally there are a lot of vehicles on the many roads there.

It doesn't matter what type of vehicle you drive, a car, SUV, truck, van, or motorcycle. You need good insurance in order to protect yourself and your vehicle.

In Illinois drivers are held financially responsible for damage they cause in an auto accident. There is a minimum amount of Chicago auto insurance that you must have.

You must have the following amounts of liability insurance: $20,000 per person up to a total of $40,000 for an uninsured motorist's injury.

This will pay your bills if you are hit by a driver that made the mistake of not having enough insurance. This will also help you if you are the victim of a hit and run accident.

You are also required to have $40,000 worth of coverage to cover the death or injury of others in an accident. You will also need $20,000 in there is an injury or death of one person in an accident you caused.

You will also need a minimum of $15,000 to cover any damage that you may do to the property of another person. These are the minimum requirements you need to have for your Chicago auto insurance.

You may want more than just the minimum amount of coverage. Besides just the minimum coverage you may want to consider purchasing collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, towing and rental coverage, medical coverage, and accidental death benefit coverage.

If you do decide to purchase comprehensive and collision auto coverage you should set your deductibles as high as possible. The will help to keep your premiums lower.

When you decided on what coverage you are looking for you can shop around compare rates from one insurance company to another.

Getting Chicago auto insurance is a necessity if you plan on driving in the Windy City.

No Chicago Auto Insurance? Better Think Again...

According to the IL Secretary of State:

Illinois' mandatory insurance law is one of the most significant consumer protection measures now on the books.

Complying with the Law
You are in compliance with the mandatory insurance law if you have vehicle liability insurance in the following minimum amounts:

* $20,000 - injury or death of one person in an accident
* $40,000 - injury or death of more than one person in an accident
* $15,000 - damage to property of another person

You must always carry your insurance card in your vehicle and show it upon request by any law enforcement officer. Your insurance company will send you an insurance card, usually when your insurance policy is issued or renewed.

Your signature on the Vehicle Renewal Registration Application affirms that your vehicle will be properly insured throughout the registration period.

Enforcement
Enforcement of the mandatory insurance law is accomplished through a random questionnaire sampling process and the issuance of traffic tickets.

* If the computer randomly selects your vehicle, you will receive a questionnaire asking for the name of your insurance company and policy number. Your answers will be verified with the company you name. If you do not have insurance or fail to return the questionnaire with the requested information, your license plates will be suspended.

* If you are stopped for a traffic violation or involved in an accident, a law enforcement officer may issue a traffic citation if you are unable to provide evidence of insurance. If convicted, your license plates will be suspended and you will face the following fines:

o minimum $500 fine for driving uninsured
o minimum $1,000 fine for driving a vehicle while the license plates are suspended for a previous insurance violation

Suspension and Reinstatement
The license plates of first time offenders are suspended until a $100 reinstatement fee and current evidence of insurance are provided. Repeat offenders are required to serve a four-month suspension period, pay the $100 reinstatement fee and provide current evidence of insurance before being eligible for reinstatement.

While the license plates are suspended no one may operate your vehicle; however, you may operate other vehicles that are insured.

Vehicles Affected
Liability insurance is required for all motor vehicles that must display license plates and are being driven, including cars, vans, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, trucks and buses. Trailers are not required to have liability insurance.

So if you are thinking about simply ignoring your responsibility to have current and valid Chicago auto insurance, you should think again!
